Body doubling means: someone is there while you work. Not to help, not to supervise — just there. For many people with ADHD, it's the single most effective trick out there.
Why it works
- Gentle accountability: Getting up to sort the laundry feels weird when someone's watching.
- Borrowed structure: The other person's calm working energy rubs off on you.
- The appointment effect: A scheduled time to work is more binding than a good intention.
How to do it
- In person: A study buddy, the library, a café — an environment with people who are working.
- Remote: A video call, both muted, cameras on, work for 50 minutes, chat for 10.
- Focus communities: Platforms like Focusmate match you with strangers as doubles.
Combining it
Body doubling works best with a visible focus timer and one single clear task — not a 40-item list. For more ways to tackle those getting-started blocks, check out this post.
By the way: In ToDoClub you just toss tasks into the chat as a sentence — the AI figures out the due date, priority, and life area on its own. Try it for free at todoclub.org.
