Deep Work for Beginners: From 0 to 90 Minutes of Focused Work

TTobias Tröndle · Updated: 2026-05-04

Cal Newport's Deep Work — focused, demanding work without distraction — is a skill, not a state. And like any skill, it's trained, not simply decided.

The 4-Week Build-Up

  • Week 1: 2× 25 minutes a day (Pomodoro) on ONE task. Phone in another room.
  • Week 2: Stretch the blocks to 40 minutes. Systematically cut down your sources of distraction.
  • Week 3: 2× 60 minutes with a fixed ritual (same place, same time, same way in).
  • Week 4: One 90-minute block in the morning — that's already more deep work than most people manage in a week.

The Ground Rules

  1. Define what "done" means beforehand — depth needs a target.
  2. Keep a notepad beside you for stray ideas (a "later list"), so nothing pulls you out.
  3. Surface deliberately afterward: a short real break, not the feed.

Stay Realistic

3–4 hours of deep work a day is the ceiling, even for pros. Two solid blocks beat one heroic 8-hour attempt.
