Focus & Deep Work: Getting Concentrated Work Done in a Loud World

TTobias Tröndle · Updated: 2026-02-02

Concentration is not a character trait — it's an environment. If you want to work deeply, make it easy for yourself.

The foundation: one task

Multitasking is a myth; the brain only switches fast and loses up to 40 % performance doing it. Monotasking is the only real productivity hack: declare one task, make it the only thing on screen.

Remove distractions before they happen

Willpower loses against the feed — every time. So: tame notifications radically (people + time-critical only), put the phone in another room, one window in fullscreen.

Build depth like a muscle

Start with two 25-minute blocks a day and grow to 90 minutes over four weeks. Use a visible countdown ring — an expiring timer keeps you in the tunnel. Define beforehand what "done" means.

Recovery is part of the job

Focus runs in ~90-minute waves. Real breaks (movement, distance, no feed) let you surf the next wave at the top instead of grinding through the trough.

FAQ

Does music help? Instrumental and familiar: yes, often. Anything with lyrics while reading or writing: usually no.
