Focus Music: What Helps You Concentrate — and What Gets in the Way

TTobias Tröndle · Updated: 2026-05-22

A turbo boost for some, a jammer for others: music while working is deeply personal — but research gives us clear guardrails.

The ground rules

  1. No lyrics for language work: Reading/writing text + lyrics = interference in your language center. Go instrumental, or go silent.
  2. Familiar beats new: New music grabs your attention ("what's this?"), while familiar playlists stay under the radar.
  3. Yes for routine, maybe for creative: For monotonous tasks, music lifts your mood and performance; for complex thinking, silence often wins.

What works

  • Instrumental: Lo-fi, classical (Baroque!), film scores, ambient
  • Noise: Brown noise (deeper than white noise) — many people with ADHD swear by it
  • Nature + café sounds: a moderate background hum masks disruptive office noise (low-distraction environment)

The playlist trick

A fixed focus playlist becomes your starting ritual: the first few beats = work mode. Your brain loves these signals — it's the same mechanism as getting into flow.
