Time Blindness and ADHD: When 5 Minutes Feel Like 2 Hours

TTobias Tröndle · Updated: 2026-03-11

"I'll just quickly check my email" — and suddenly the whole morning is gone. Time blindness means: time isn't felt, only known. And knowing isn't enough.

The Two Faces

  1. Time disappears: In hyperfocus, hours pass like minutes.
  2. Time gets misjudged: "This'll take 10 minutes" (reality: 90) — or the other way around, which is why tasks seem huge and you never get started.

Building External Clocks

  • Analog visibility: A ring that counts down (focus timer) makes the remaining time physically visible.
  • Time anchors: Set alarms not just for appointments, but for transitions ("leave in 15 min").
  • The buffer rule: Estimate honestly — then multiply by 1.5.
  • [Timeboxing](/blog/timeboxing-tasks-calendar-method): Fixed windows replace your sense of time with structure.

Stay Kind to Yourself

Time blindness isn't a lack of discipline. You're compensating for a missing inner clock with external ones — just like people who wear glasses to see.

By the way: In ToDoClub, you just drop tasks into the chat as a sentence — the AI figures out the due date, priority, and life area on its own. Try it for free at todoclub.org.
