The Pareto Principle: 80% Impact from 20% Effort

TTobias Tröndle · Updated: 2026-03-30

80% of your results come from 20% of your tasks. The question is never "How do I get everything done?" but "Which 20% is it for me?"

Finding your 20%

Ask yourself two questions about every task:

  1. Does it move a goal forward directly (revenue, health, a relationship)?
  2. Would anyone notice if it disappeared four weeks from now?

Two yeses = a high-leverage task. Two nos = a candidate for cutting or delegating.

The uncomfortable part

Pareto also means this: 80% of your list is busywork, not impact. Perfectly formatted slides, the third round of edits, meetings with no decision — all real work, barely any return.

Making it practical

Be honest when marking the priorities on your list: only 1 in 5 tasks gets to be "high." Then tackle the high ones first — and notice how little of the rest ever gets missed.
