The 2-Minute Rule: Handle Small Stuff Now Instead of Managing It

TTobias Tröndle · Updated: 2026-04-03

Answering that email, confirming the appointment, starting the dishwasher: anything under two minutes gets done immediately — because capturing, managing, and retrieving it costs more time than just doing it.

Why it works so well

Small tasks are the sand in the gears of every list: 15 two-minute tasks look like a mountain and trigger paralysis. Done right away, they simply never exist.

The two ways to use it

  1. When it arrives (from GTD): A new mini-task? Don't write it down — do it.
  2. When you're starting out (per James Clear): Every new habit begins as a two-minute version. "Reading" = one page. More on this in mini habits.

The limit

Be careful during focus time: when you're deep in Deep Work, the rule does NOT apply — otherwise every little idea becomes an excuse to jump ship. In that case: jot it down quickly and batch it later.

By the way: In ToDoClub you just toss tasks into the chat as a sentence — the AI figures out the due date, priority, and life area on its own. Try it for free at todoclub.org.
