Digital detox sounds like a cabin in the woods — but what we mean is something far more practical: deliberate offline islands in your workday, where your brain gets to think for itself again.
The three levels
- The mail-free morning: No inbox, no Slack until 11 a.m. The most important work happens first (Eat the Frog) — genuine emergencies will reach you by phone.
- The offline block: 90 minutes, airplane mode, one task. At first your hand twitches toward your phone — by day three it starts thinking again.
- The detox day: Once a month, a workday using only the tools the task actually requires. It's startling how much time otherwise vanishes into "just a quick check."
Why it works
Constant availability keeps your brain in shallow scan mode. Depth only emerges once that scan mode is switched off — see Deep Work. And that fear of missing out? After two weeks you realize: there never was anything to miss.
Getting started
Begin with level 1 and tame your notifications at the same time. Expect three restless days — after that, you won't want to go back.
By the way: In ToDoClub you just toss tasks into the chat as a sentence — the AI figures out the due date, priority, and area of life on its own. Try it for free at todoclub.org.
