The Eisenhower Matrix: Important vs. Urgent in 4 Quadrants

TTobias Tröndle · Updated: 2026-02-09

The Eisenhower Matrix sorts tasks by two questions: Is it important? Is it urgent? That gives you four quadrants with four clear actions.

The four quadrants

  • Important + urgent → do it now. Crises, deadlines due today.
  • Important + not urgent → schedule it. The most valuable quadrant: strategy, health, relationships. This is where real progress happens.
  • Urgent + not important → delegate it. A lot of what feels loud actually belongs to someone else. See delegating tasks.
  • Neither → drop it. Have the courage to let things go.

The classic mistake

Most people spend their day stuck in quadrant 3 (urgent, unimportant) and wonder why the important stuff keeps slipping. Deliberately block time for quadrant 2 — ideally in the morning.

In practice

You don't need to draw boxes every day. It's enough to give each task an honest priority and sort your day around it — just like we describe in the guide how to run a to-do list the right way.

By the way: In ToDoClub you just toss a task into the chat as a plain sentence — the AI figures out the due date, priority, and life area on its own. Try it for free at todoclub.org.
