Energy Management: Plan Around Your Power, Not Just the Clock

TTobias Tröndle · Updated: 2026-04-08

At 9 a.m. you can write in one hour what would take you three at 3 p.m. If you only plan your time and ignore your energy, you're handing your best hours over to email.

Finding your curve

For three days, jot down your energy level (1–5) every two hours. The patterns are almost always the same: a high in the morning, a dip after lunch, a small second wind in the late afternoon — shifted for night owls, of course.

Matching your tasks

  • High phase: thinking work, writing, tough decisions — this is where your frog lives.
  • Low phase: routine, filing, simple emails, phone calls.
  • Second wind: planning, conversations, creative work.

Protecting your energy

Energy is renewable, but not unlimited: real breaks, movement, water, daylight. And every unnecessary decision has a cost — routines are energy-saving programs.
