Beating Procrastination: Why You Put Things Off — and What Actually Helps

TTobias Tröndle · Updated: 2026-05-25

Procrastination isn't a time-management problem — it's an emotion-management problem. We put off tasks that stir up uncomfortable feelings: overwhelm, boredom, fear of being judged.

The diagnosis

For every task you keep dodging, ask: what exactly feels unpleasant?

  • Too big/unclear → break it into first small steps
  • Boring → timer challenge, music, pair it with a reward
  • Fear of a bad result → "crappy version first": start badly on purpose, polish later
  • An awkward conversationeat the frog in the morning, before your head builds excuses

Seven fixes

  1. The 10-minute deal (just start, quitting allowed)
  2. Shrink the task until it sounds ridiculous
  3. A deadline with a witness (promise someone the result)
  4. Change your surroundings
  5. Task first, phone second
  6. Self-compassion instead of self-criticism — proven to work better
  7. Keep your to-do list short: overloaded lists feed avoidance

The core

It's not about "becoming more disciplined," but about packaging tasks so they trigger less resistance. That's not a weakness — it's a technique.
